Hello and welcome to The Home Security Life! I am, and have been for nearly a decade, a consultant in the Home Security and Automation industry and will be sharing insights and stories from my time within the space.
I will also be discussing the different equipment used as well as the monitoring stations and companies that provide people from all walks of life with the protection for their home and families.
How I Became a Consultant
My name is Zach, and I’ve been involved with the home security industry for going on a decade now. I can remember when I was a kid, no older than 12 years old, and seeing the ADT commercials on TV. I was fascinated with the 1’s and 0’s blanketing the home, I’m sure you can remember these old TV ads?
At the time I couldn’t figure out how they were able to create this barrier around a home providing protection from burglaries and fires. As I grew older I learned about the technology that was used and my fascination continued to grow.
Years later, and without seeking employment, I was offered a job as a technician for a growing alarm company. I loved my time spent as a technician and the knowledge I was able to obtain from the experience. However, it was short-lived as I simultaneously began to learn more about myself.
I realized that I enjoyed helping clients diagnose their greatest concerns with the vulnerabilities of their homes and then create a solution that worked for them. I became a consultant within a year and have since helped hundreds of homeowners gain peace of mind protecting their greatest assets – their homes and families.
In my time working as a home security consultant, there are few scenarios I haven’t encountered. I have helped people from nearly the full financial spectrum, including those living on social security, obtain medical, fire, security, automation, and surveillance systems all while fitting within their respective budgets. I have traveled the United States, working in every neighborhood imaginable, all for one purpose – following my passion for helping others.
What Pushes Me on a Daily Basis
The reason I have remained a home security consultant for my entire adult life stems from my desire to help others, travel the country and the world, and experience life from a myriad of different viewpoints. The first part is my driving force while the latter two parts are so intertwined with the first that they became nearly as big of motivators.
I mentioned watching the ADT commercials above as being the first thing that gained my attention and fascination into the industry. However, that is only part of the story.
It is true, I was intrigued by the technology and methodology going on behind the scenes, but the whole story is much sadder. I was in junior high school when I first heard a story that was so horrible, if ever given the opportunity, I promised myself that I would do anything in my power to prevent it from happening to another person.
The story begins in the school library, where I would hang out for the last hour of the day for an advisory period. The librarian was an older man and I would occasionally waste time by talking to him about his time in the military and the “olden days”.
I would always see this black and white photo on the wall behind him of a girl that looked about my age at the time. Finally, one day I asked him who she was. He told me she was an old student that had attended the same junior high and that he had the photo of her in remembrance.
He proceeded to tell me that one night her parents went out on a date and since she was 13 years old at the time they let her stay home alone (side note: this story takes place in a small, farm town in the ’70s). Considering it was a safe place with rarely any crime they thought nothing of it. However, when they arrived home they found their daughter had been fatally shot in the chest.
The police found the murderer the following day, a 20-something-year-old who was trying to make a quick buck robbing the home. The young girl heard a noise and upon investigating, walked into what would become the last moments of her young life. He turned around, startled, shot his gun and jumped out the window.
For one reason or another, this story has stayed with me ever since. It is for the reason, and so many similar stories I’ve heard over the years, that I continue to do what I do.
